Topic: The Journey of Hemp-Lime and Strawbale in Residential Building Codes

In July of 2025, the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry supported the initial approval of ICC Building Code Appendices BL Hemp-Lime and BJ Strawbale, with Minnesota-specific amendments. If fully adopted, Minnesota will become the first state to adopt the Hemp-Lime appendix. Janneke Schaap, Anna Koosmann, Simona Fischer, Danny Desjarlais and an international "dream team" of experts from the United States and Canada developed cold climate-specific language and presented it to the Technical Advisory Group for code adoption. The updated language will guide hemp-lime and strawbale projects in the Minnesota Residential Code once approved by the Construction Codes Advisory Council up for review this Spring. This marks a significant step toward climate-appropriate building methods in the state.
